The Combat Naval Gunfire Support File (CONGA), 3/1966 - 1/1973 contains a record for every naval gun fire mission during that period of the Vietnam War. Each record contains the date, time, target coordinates, rounds expended, etc.

Thanks to shipmate Bob Chase, who scrubbed the raw .csv file into a much more readable .xls spreadsheet and plotted USS Newport News CA-148 targets on MGRS charts from the period.

Note: Revised charts for the DMZ area may be available later. The current charts plot targets by their MGRS coordinates but CONGA data for the second (1968-69) and third (1972) deployments does not contain MGRS references for naval gunfire support missions in the DMZ area; targets are located only by province names. Those uncharted missions are a significant fraction of Thunder's action: more than 400 missions comprising the entire second deployment, more than 600 missions comprising more than 80 percent of the third deployment, and overall amounting to almost 40 percent of all missions in the three deployments. Bob Chase is exploring alternative charting techniques to represent those missions.
